In November 2023, Claudio and Anna embarked on an extraordinary cycling journey along the Rota Vicentina, one of the most scenic and captivating trails in Portugal. Their bike tour took them from Lisbon to Faro, revealing the magic of the Portuguese coast — dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and breathtaking views at every turn. The Rota Vicentina is the perfect route for travelers seeking an immersive experience in nature, culture, and authentic Portuguese life.
The Rota Vicentina: A Natural Paradise for Adventure Travelers
The Rota Vicentina is one of Europe’s most renowned long-distance hiking and biking routes, winding through the picturesque regions of Alentejo and Algarve. The trail is divided into two main paths: the Historical Way and the Fishermen’s Trail. The Fishermen’s Trail, which follows ancient coastal paths used by local fishermen, offers spectacular seaside landscapes and opportunities to encounter unique wildlife. Meanwhile, the Historical Way takes cyclists and hikers through Portugal’s rural heartland, unveiling traditional villages and unspoiled countryside.
Lisbon: A Warm Welcome in the Capital
Claudio and Anna’s adventure began in Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant capital, where they were welcomed by Concezio and his partner, two Italian friends living in the city. Thanks to this local connection, they explored Lisbon from a unique perspective — walking through the historic Alfama district, enjoying a moving fado performance in Chiado, and tasting the famous Pastéis de Belém in one of the city's most iconic spots. Lisbon offered a warm and unforgettable start to their journey.
The Bike Tour Begins: A Ride Through History and Nature
The following day, their cycling trip officially began, with bikes shipped from Italy. Starting from Lisbon, the group followed the Historical Way toward Sesimbra and Cabo Espichel, known for its stunning sanctuary and prehistoric dinosaur footprints. The journey continued through the Arrábida Natural Park, where they discovered some of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches, including Praia do Figueirinha — a true slice of paradise.
Setúbal, Comporta, and Sines: A Blend of Nature and Heritage
On the third day, the ride took them to Setúbal, a lively coastal town, and from there to Tróia Island, an unspoiled haven with pristine beaches. They then cycled south to Comporta, famous for its vast sand dunes and peaceful fishing villages. The day ended in Sines, birthplace of the great explorer Vasco da Gama, where the rich maritime history of Portugal came alive.
Zambujeira do Mar, Sagres, and Lagos: Coastal Wonders Await
On the fifth day, the group reached Zambujeira do Mar, a charming fishing village nestled within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. From there, they continued to Sagres, a dramatic headland with towering cliffs and a legendary fortress. On day seven, they arrived in Lagos, one of the Algarve’s most captivating towns, known for its colonial past and stunning Atlantic Ocean views.
Faro: The Final Destination
Their adventure concluded in Faro, the capital of the Algarve. Here, Claudio and Anna explored the Old Town, a maze of cobbled streets and historic squares enclosed by medieval walls. The final highlight? A traditional Cataplana de Marisco, a rich seafood stew typical of the region — the perfect culinary finale to their unforgettable journey.
Back to Lisbon: A Night in Bairro Alto
On the ninth day, they took the train back to Lisbon for one last night in the lively Bairro Alto district. With a glass of red wine in hand and the sounds of live fado music echoing through the streets, they wrapped up their journey along the Rota Vicentina — a trip that left lasting memories and a deep connection to the land and its people.
Plan Your Own Cycling Adventure on the Rota Vicentina
If you dream of an unforgettable cycling trip through Portugal’s wild coast and charming villages, the Rota Vicentina is the ideal route. Discover dramatic landscapes, immerse yourself in local culture and cuisine, and experience one of Europe’s most captivating bike travel adventures. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a curious explorer, this is a journey that will stay with you forever — a true escape into nature, tradition, and the soul of Portugal.
